Fotografiska Stockholm: Contemporary photography
Located in the heart of Södermalm, Fotografiska Stockholm is more than a museum—it’s a dynamic center for contemporary photography and visual culture. Since opening in 2010, it has become one of Stockholm’s most iconic cultural institutions, renowned for thought-provoking exhibitions, educational programs, and a world-class dining experience with panoramic harbor views.
Housed in a restored industrial-era customs building, Fotografiska invites visitors to explore photography in all its forms—from documentary to experimental. With exhibitions that challenge, inspire, and connect, it offers a truly immersive cultural experience.
Exhibitions at Fotografiska Stockholm
Fotografiska curates a bold lineup of rotating exhibitions featuring both internationally acclaimed and emerging photographers. These shows span styles and themes—from powerful photojournalism to avant-garde abstraction. Each exhibit transforms the space into a narrative landscape, revealing the world through the unique lenses of contemporary visionaries.
Programs, workshops, and experiences
Beyond its exhibitions, Fotografiska offers a rich schedule of educational programs, including workshops, masterclasses, and public talks. These events deepen engagement with photography as both art and cultural commentary.
Visitors can also enjoy one of Stockholm’s most celebrated restaurants, located on the top floor and known for its sustainable fine dining and sweeping city views. The gift shop offers curated books, prints, and design objects, perfect for photography lovers and collectors.
A building with history
Fotografiska’s home is a beautifully restored early 20th-century customs building, originally constructed in 1906. Over its history, the structure transitioned from commercial use to cultural landmark. The building’s distinctive brick façade and arched windows remain intact, carefully preserved during its transformation into a museum space.
Architects Johan Celsing and Per Olof Hallman led the renovation, introducing new floors, a glass atrium, and modern infrastructure while respecting the building’s historic integrity. The result is a venue where history and innovation coexist—a fitting metaphor for photography itself.
