Set beside the serene waters of Kalvfjärden, Tyresö Palace (Tyresö Slott) is a hidden gem just outside Stockholm. Originally built in the 1630s by Gabriel Oxenstierna, this stately home was later transformed by Marquis Claes Lagergren into a national romantic showcase of aristocratic taste. Today, it stands as a testament to Sweden’s layered architectural and cultural history—surrounded by natural beauty and perfect for a scenic day trip.
With its English-inspired park, Mediterranean-style gardens, and access to hiking trails in the Tyresta Nature Reserve, Tyresö Palace combines heritage and outdoor escape in one elegant destination.
Though the estate dates back to the Middle Ages, the current structure emerged in the 1630s under Gabriel Gustafsson Oxenstierna. In the late 19th century, Marquis Claes Lagergren remodeled the palace in a national romantic style, blending historical elements with contemporary tastes of the era.
The main building spans three stories, flanked by two copper-topped towers. Two symmetrical wings stretch out from the center, creating a stately courtyard with striking Baroque presence. The estate also includes Tyresö Church, a remarkably preserved rural church from Sweden’s era as a European power.
Tyresö Palace isn’t just a castle—it’s an expansive landscape of trails, gardens, and natural wonders. Wander the formal gardens designed with Mediterranean flair, or hike into the adjacent Tyresta Nature Reserve, where old-growth forests, lakes, and abundant wildlife await. From spring blooms to autumn foliage, every season offers a new way to experience this unique location.
Whether you’re drawn by the historical intrigue, the architectural grace, or the peaceful trails beyond its gates, Tyresö Palace delivers a complete cultural and nature experience. Just a short journey from Stockholm, it’s the ideal retreat to explore Sweden’s romantic past—at your own pace.
