Djurgården Church: A Historic Chapel by Skansen and Gröna Lund

Nestled between Gröna Lund and Skansen, Djurgården Church (Djurgårdskyrkan) is one of Stockholm’s most charming and quietly historic chapels. Surrounded by leafy parkland and just steps from the city’s busiest attractions, it offers a rare moment of calm on Djurgården.

Unlike the grand scale of Storkyrkan or the monumental Baroque presence of Hedvig Eleonora Church, Djurgården Church reflects a more intimate side of Stockholm’s religious life—deeply rooted in community, service, and everyday history.

🦠 From Chapel to Cholera Hospital
During the cholera epidemic of the 1830s, Djurgårdskyrkan was temporarily transformed into a hospital—serving the community in a time of crisis long before it became a permanent place of worship.

A journey through history

Built in 1828 by shipowner John Burgman, the church was originally intended as a school before quickly adapting to the needs of the community. Over time, it served as a hospital, narrowly escaped demolition, and was finally established as a parish church in 1880.

One of its artistic highlights is the altar painting by Prince Eugen, who lived nearby at Waldemarsudde. His work adds a unique cultural layer to this otherwise modest wooden interior.

A gathering place for the community

Today, Djurgården Church remains a living parish and cultural meeting place. Services, concerts, lectures, and social gatherings continue to shape its identity, supported by the Friends of Djurgården Church.

Its role mirrors that of Sabbatsberg Church, another historic wooden chapel in Stockholm, where simplicity and community take precedence over grandeur.
