💡 Summary
Discover Rosendal Palace in Djurgården, a serene neoclassical retreat that was once the summer home of King Karl XIV Johan. Step inside to glimpse royal life through preserved interiors, then stroll to nearby Rosendal Gardens, where biodynamic farming yields seasonal blooms.

Rosendal Palace: Discover the tranquil beauty

Nestled within the lush greenery of Djurgården Park in Stockholm, Rosendal Palace is a serene neoclassical retreat. Built between 1823 and 1827 for King Karl XIV Johan, the palace exemplifies the Swedish interpretation of the French Empire Style—locally known as the Karl Johan Style. Designed by Fredrik Blom after the original structure was lost to fire, it remains one of the best-preserved examples of this elegant yet restrained aesthetic.

A royal escape

Rosendal Palace was created as a personal haven for Sweden’s first Bernadotte king—a place of respite from the formalities of royal court life. The interiors, remarkably preserved, showcase vibrant textiles, mahogany furniture, and diplomatic gifts, including the famed Sèvres table from King Louis Philippe of France, depicting Bernadotte’s birthplace.

More recently, Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia resided at Rosendal Palace during home renovations between 2015 and 2017, adding a contemporary royal connection to this historic residence.

🏛️ The Porphyry Vase: A Monumental Gift
In 1825, King Karl XIV Johan commissioned a colossal porphyry vase from Älvdalen. Inspired by an ancient artifact from Herculaneum, the finished piece—carved from a single 100-ton boulder—now weighs 9.3 tons. Standing in the palace gardens, it celebrates the king’s reverence for classical design and Swedish craftsmanship.

Gardens & sustainability

Beside the palace lies the Rosendal Gardens, a thriving example of biodynamic horticulture. Originally laid out in the early 1800s, the gardens now emphasize sustainability and organic growing practices. Visitors can wander past fragrant rose bushes, herb beds, and fruit orchards arranged with precision and natural harmony.

The adjacent Greenhouse Café serves seasonal meals made with ingredients from the gardens and nearby producers, offering an eco-conscious culinary experience surrounded by nature.
