Storkyrkan, also known as Stockholm Cathedral or Church of Saint Nicholas, is the oldest church in Stockholm, Sweden. Located in the heart of Gamla Stan (the Old Town) next to the Royal Palace, Storkyrkan has a rich history dating back to the 13th century. It serves as the parish church for the Royal Court of Sweden and is also a popular tourist attraction.

Storkyrkan is renowned for its impressive Gothic and Baroque architecture, including intricate stone carvings and beautiful stained glass windows. Inside, visitors can admire the stunning interior, which features a Baroque altar, medieval sculptures, and ornate decorations.

St. George and the Dragon

One of the highlights of Storkyrkan is the statue of St. George and the Dragon (S:t Göran och Draken), a wooden sculpture dating back to the late 15th century. This iconic artwork is one of the most famous symbols of Stockholm and is located near the entrance of the church. Regent Sten Sture the Elder commissioned it as a memorial for himself and his wife following his triumph over Danish forces at the Battle of Brunkeberg in 1471. Sture had invoked the saint’s protection for his army during the battle. The sculpture was inaugurated in 1489.

Storkyrkan hosts regular worship services, concerts, and special events throughout the year. It is also open to visitors who wish to explore its historic interiors and learn about its significance in Swedish history and culture.
