Nestled amidst the vibrant streets of Kungsholmen, adjacent to Stockholm City Hall, one of Stockholm’s central islands, lies a timeless architectural marvel – Kungsholm Church (Church of Ulrika Eleonora).

History of the Kungsholm Church

After Karl XI had generously contributed funds to the construction, the foundation of Kungsholm Church was laid on May 10, 1673. Unfortunately, construction work was interrupted in 1676 due to economic complications and conflicts.

Nearly a decade later, in 1685, the construction of the magnificent church resumed, and it wasn’t until Sunday, December 2, 1688, that Kungsholm Church was finally inaugurated. Archbishop Olof Svebilius led the inauguration ceremony in the presence of King Karl XI, Ulrika Eleonora and Dowager Queen Hedvig Eleonora.

Despite the solemn inauguration, the interior of the church was only partially completed, and the vaulted ceilings were still missing, marking an ongoing effort towards the completion of this splendid building. Due to economic reasons, it wasn’t until 1757 that the church’s vaulted ceilings were finished.

The church’s original 23 Carolinian windows disappeared during a restoration in 1882. During the reconstruction in 1954–56, efforts were made to retrieve and reconstruct them, and 20 of them now provide the church interior with its golden-yellow light.
