A Historic Landmark: Bromma Church

Bromma Church stands as one of Stockholm’s ancient edifices, nestled in the eponymous district to the city’s west. Dating back to the latter half of the 12th century, its circular central section remains an iconic feature, representing a unique architectural style.

Alongside Bromma Church, Solna Church and Munsö Church were also erected during this era, contributing to the rich tapestry of round church architecture in medieval Sweden.

Over the centuries, Bromma Church has undergone several renovations and expansions, reflecting changes in architectural styles and religious practices.

  • Bus 117 travels between Brommaplan (subway station) and SpÃ¥nga station (commuter train). The bus stop where you get off is called Bromma Church.
  • From the roundabout at Bromma Square, you turn onto SpÃ¥ngavägen, then right onto Bromma Church Road, and left onto Gliavägen.

Strategic Construction and Defense

Constructed with strategic foresight, Bromma Church was fortified to defend the Mälar region, given the higher waterline of Lake Mälaren during its time of construction. Serving as a vital component in the defense network, it was part of a trio of fortified round churches, including Solna and Munsö, intended to bolster the defenses of the region against potential threats.

Bromma Churchyard: A Place of Remembrance

Bromma Churchyard, spanning 5 hectares, has been a place of burial since medieval times. Bromma Church is surrounded by a picturesque churchyard, providing a peaceful and tranquil setting for visitors to explore. The churchyard contains historic around 8.000 graves and monuments, offering glimpses into the area’s past.
