Högalid Church (Högalidskyrkan) is a notable church located in the Horstull district of Södermalm, Stockholm.

Designed by architect Ivar Tengbom, it was built between 1917 and 1923 in a distinctive National Romantic style with Art Nouveau influences. The church is known for its iconic tower, which has become a prominent landmark in the Stockholm skyline.

Architectural Development of the Högalid Church

Architect Ivar Tengbom was commissioned by the parish to design the new church in May 1913. The initial proposal, approved by the parish in 1914, deviated from the conventional east-west orientation, instead opting for a north-south axis. Tengbom’s design featured a hipped roof facing south and double towers to infuse the building with vitality.

The towers’ height was adjusted to harmonize with Stockholm City Hall, then under construction across Riddarfjärden.

Subsequent revisions saw slimmer towers and an elongated nave. The ongoing construction of Stockholm City Hall had sparked a heightened interest in architecture, likely prompting the church council to seek a more ambitious and significantly costlier solution than Tengbom’s initial proposal. Högalid Church was consecrated on June 10, 1923, by Archbishop Nathan Söderblom, following over six years of construction from the laying of the foundation stone on May 27, 1917.

As a curiosity, it can be mentioned that the handcrafted dark red brick in monk bond was also used in Stockholm City Hall on the other side of Riddarfjärden.
