S:t Jacob’s Church, located in at Jakobs Square opposite the Opera House and with KungsträdgÃ¥rden facing its eastern gable, is one of the city’s more significant religious and architectural landmarks.

History and Architecture of the S:t Jacob’s Church

S:t Jacob’s Church has a long history dating back to the 16th century. Construction of the church commenced in the 1580s, yet due to several setbacks, its completion was delayed by approximately 60 years, finally being consecrated on the first Advent in 1643, in the presence of Queen Christina. The exterior is primarily characterized by the square central tower with a rounded top featuring a lantern, along with intricately sculpted sandstone portals. The church obtained its carved sandstone portals in the north and west, executed between 1643 and 1644 by Heinrich Blume, while the southern portal was crafted by sculptor Markus Hebel in 1644.

In the church tower, four bells reside. Following the tower fire in 1723, three of them were acquired by salvaging the metal from the bells destroyed in the blaze. Another bell was added in 1779.
