The theme is performing and visual arts including collections, concerts, performances and dance courses.

The founder of the Stockholm Dance Museum, the Swede Rolf de Maré (1884-1964) was a leader of the Wedish Ballet in Paris inte 1920´s, and in the 1930´s he opened what is said to be the worlds first Dance museum.

Parts of the collections where later brought to Stockholm by Maré, and in 1953 the museum opened for the first time in Stockholm.
