About the Gripsholm Castle

Gripsholm Castle, a royal castle from 1537 in Mariefred. Gripsholm Castle is one of Sweden’s ten royal palaces and is regarded as one of Sweden´s finest historical monuments. Its beautiful situation near the town of Mariefred by the lake Mälaren makes this a fantastic day excursion.

The castle was built by King Gustav Vasa in 1537 and later extended by Gustav III. The location earlier housed a fortress from the late 1300´s belonging to a wealthy family, but was confiscated by Gustav Vasa in 1526. The fortress was torned down and the Gripsholm Castle was built on the same spot.

Since Gustav Vasa, this magnificient castle has belonged to the Royal Swedish Family, and served as its residence until 1713. It then served as a prison until King Gustav III decided to renovate the building in 1773.

Today the castle is a historical museum well worth a visit, including the Governmental collection of portraits.
